THINGS TO DO

For centuries Ringwood has been the traditional market town of the New Forest and Avon Valley.  Featuring an attractive mix of ancient and modern you’ll find thatched cottages nestling next to brick Georgian Town houses.

Ringwood market, granted its charter by King Henry III in 1226, continues to be a thriving weekly market held on a Wednesday morning.   Ringwood has a long and historical past but is particularly remembered as the place where the Duke of Monmouth was held after his unsuccessful rebellion in 1685.  Visitors looking for some retail therapy won’t be disappointed by the town’s many shops large and small, from family-run businesses to well known up-market high street names.

Ringwood is the gateway to the beautiful New Forest National Park, which offers wildlife in abundance and walking, cycling and motoring through outstanding countryside.   Ringwood also sits roughly half-way along the picturesque 34-mile Avon Valley Path which follows the meandering River Avon from Salisbury down to the sea at Christchurch.  The Hampshire Avon is world famous for its trout, grayling and salmon fishing.

The towns of Bournemouth and Poole and the cities of Salisbury and Southampton are within easy driving distance (Bournemouth 10 miles, Poole and Salisbury 18 miles, Southampton 20 miles).

To the south you’ll find beaches for every taste - from Bournemouth’s traditional pier and promenade to the golden sands of Sandbanks at Poole and the World Heritage Site of Dorset’s rocky Jurassic Coast.

Heading north to the rolling Wiltshire downs, historic Salisbury and its magnificent cathedral are not to be missed - and neither is the mystery that is Stonehenge.

Avonmead House is the perfect base for visiting the many attractions to be found in this beautiful part of the south of England.
